The history of digital photography is synonymous with two scientists, George Smith and Willard Boyle who invented the charge coupled device (CCD) on 17 October 1969. The device came to be known as a core component of digital cameras since it is the basic element in digital camera sensors. Smith and Boyle originally intended to use the CCD in various applications involving semiconductor memory of computers. But they found themselves with what became the basis of the digital photography history.
Their other intention was to create a solid-state camera that they would utilize in various video applications. Smith and Boyle spent just two hours to create a phenomenal structure of the CCD, illustrate it operation modes, and outline its various uses. The two scientists designed a less sophisticated video camera using the CCD technology in 1970.
After five years, in 1975, they designed multiple video broadcast devices in which they integrated the CCD. Most importantly, the CDD was integrated in digital still cameras. When the CCD technology became widespread, Sony Corporation released the Magnetic Video Camera (abbreviated Mavica camera). The company used the CCD technology in the camera to record video on small compressed floppy disks. The digital camera was only applicable for capturing freeze-frames for use in video clips.
Kodak improved digital photography when it produced a full featured camera in 1986. The camera had a high resolution of 1,400,000 pixels and with it, fine 5 by 7 inch images could be produced. Later advancements involved modification of the camera to produce the Nikon F3 digital camera, an initiative between Nikon and Kodak. The camera was highly advanced and had features of characteristic of fine digital photography with an inclination towards dedicated photojournalists.
